April 25, 2012

On April 25th, Project STYLE brought STD testing services to Johnson & Wales University in North Miami through partner agency Care Resource. These services were provided in conjunction to the HIV testing that is offered every Wednesday by Project STYLE staff. During the evening, Project STYLE staff participated in a "Sex Talk Happy Hour" hosted by a Johnson & Wales Sorority. During this event, staff provided information on STDs, testing sites, and other prevention education topics. Our staff was able to speak one-on-one with many of the students and answer any questions they had.

April 13 and 27, 2012

During April, Mr. Garvin from Project STYLE again visited Lindsay Hopkins Technical Center to provide a substance abuse and HIV/STD prevention class to a group of young adults recently enrolled in Greater Miami Service Corps vocational programs. The PRIME For Life curriculum was utilized and topics covered include: values, choices, psychological influences, impairment problems, relationships, and HIV/STD prevention.

April 7, 14 and 23, 2012

During the month of April, Ann-Michelle from Project STYLE visited St. Thomas University to facilitate a 3 session group curriculum called Safe Dates, which covers topics on dating, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Over the course of the 3 sessions, participants discussed the linkage between dating violence and substance abuse, and learned skills to prevent substance abuse related problems.

March 14-16, 2012

On March 14th, Project STYLE participated in a health and wellness fair at Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in North Miami. This event also served to promote the new partnership between the JWU Counseling Services Department and Project STYLE/The Village to offer free HIV testing on campus every Wednesday.
On March 15th and 16th, The Village and Project STYLE returned to St. Thomas University to offer another round of free HIV testing to those students and staff who had been unable to participate in the February 7th event. The St. Thomas University community again demonstrated its deep commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

March 5, 2012

During the months of November and December of 2011, Project STYLE Prevention Specialist, Carl Garvin had the privilege of facilitating prevention education sessions at Miami Beach Senior High School. Two graduating senior classes were afforded the opportunity to receive prevention education and life skills training.

February 7

The Village South and Project STYLE marked National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day by holding an HIV testing event at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. This also marked the first time that HIV testing services were offered on campus and the St. Thomas University Community including students, faculty, and staff came out in full force to help raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS in Miami Gardens and the surrounding community.

During the months of November and December of 2011, Project STYLE Prevention Specialist, Carl Garvin had the privilege of facilitating prevention education sessions at Miami Beach Senior High School. Two graduating senior classes were afforded the opportunity to receive prevention education and life skills training.
The students participated in activities that addressed Preventing Substance Abuse, Alcohol and Drug Addiction, Decision Making for Health, The Value of Good Health, The Media and Health, and Family Communications. Topics addressed were obtained from the PRIME For Life and Life-Skills Training curriculums respectively. Additionally, each student was asked to complete a Questionnaire that addressed at risk behaviors and to participate in team building activities.
